Jorge Jorge, the CEO of Toro Verde, a nature adventure tour company, laid the first stone in the construction of a new luxury hotel, Nayara Toro Verde, in Orocovis, which is projected to inject some $6 million into the local economy.
"Thanks to all of your support, and to always thinking about being innovative, pioneering and at the forefront of ecotourism, we have joined forces with Nayara Hotel, which is a five-star hotel of international recognition that is highly experienced in giving guests unforgettable experiences, to build a hotel in the mountains of Toro Verde, which will bring another perspective on luxury tourism and ecotourism to Puerto Rico," the businessman said. "I'm sure this will be the beginning of another successful project to show the world the potential of this beautiful island," he added.
The construction stems from a negotiation between extreme-adventures company Toro Verde and Costa Rica's Nayara chain of luxury hotels.
The director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Co., Ingrid Rivera Rocafort, said that "besides the great value for our construction industry, the Nayara Toro Verde hotel also represents an important economic impact for Puerto Rico's mountain region."
She said the first phase of construction will consist of a $2.5 million investment and is expected to generate 50 to 60 jobs during construction and 30 to 40 jobs during its operational phase, for a total 100 direct jobs in a year.
"The construction of 50 cabins is projected and a final investment of approximately $6 million for the country's economy," Tourism Co.'s executive director said.
The first stage will feature 20 luxury cabins, the lobby, common areas and a pool, all intended to meet the criteria established by the Tourism Co. to obtain ecotourism-project certification.
"Today is an important day for us. For the first time, Nayara Hotel expands its horizons beyond Costa Rica. We are very excited to be on this beautiful island and in a project as successful as Toro Verde," Nayara's Fredy Obando said.
In addition to laying the foundation for the Nayara Toro Verde hotel, a rope course, “El Laberinto del Toro” (Bull Labyrinth), was also inaugurated Tuesday.
The construction of this attraction entailed a $200,000 investment that features 36 different adventures, such as canopies, obstacles and rappelling.
According to a release on the inauguration, it is the largest in America and can hold 50 people an hour. It will mainly serve for team-building events and birthdays.
